Social Activities

Social activities are sponsored by the Orchard Brook Homeowners Association as well as some of our neighbors.  We enjoy gathering for plenty of family-friendly fun as well as some grownup activities.

We need volunteers to plan social events for this year! If you are interested, please email the board.

Men’s Poker Night

We’re having this year’s men’s poker night at the Orchard Brook Clubhouse on Friday Feb 6th at 7:30pm.  We play a variety of poker games with reasonable stakes of $.25 or $.50 bets.  Sometimes there are multiple tables and one is usually a hold ’em table.  Feel free to bring a beverage of your choice and a snack if you like.  We’ll also have a Super Bowl squares pool.  Feel free to invite a friend and spread the word through the neighborhood, there’s always room at the tables.  It’s a great way to break the winter doldrums. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Joe Coppotelli at joecoppotelli@msn.com.

Orchard Brook Book Club

Book club offers a consistent open invitation to all adults 18+, so bookish guys and gals, please join in the fun anytime! We have a wonderful mix of new and long-time residents in the group, and a wide range of ages. Bring your own beverage and a snack to share if you like.

Sunday, February 22 at 7pm at the Clubhouse, discussing Detective Aunty by Uzma Jalaluddin (cozy mystery)

Wednesday, April 8 at 7pm at the Clubhouse, discussing The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan (dystopian)

Book club will aim to meet every six weeks. We will rotate through different weeknights to allow more participants to join. Come when you can, skip when you have conflicts. Stay tuned for more book selections and dates to be announced.

If you didn’t finish the book (yes, you can intentionally quit for any reason), please come to the meeting to share your reading experience and socialize. Books aren’t an obligation; they are an invitation!

The Downers Grove Library offers extended checkout for local book clubs. If you’d like to participate, please email Beth (bethagreen73@gmail.com) with your library card account name & number. Please specify if you would prefer large print or audiobook (Audio CD or Playaways/preloaded mp3 players) and the library will accommodate that request if available, and provide a regular print copy if not. Your information will remain on file at the library as part of the “Orchard Brook Book Club,” and when the book club organizers request the next title, the library will check out a copy on your account for six weeks instead of three. All you have to do is pick it up from the library’s hold area and return it to the library after our meeting/discussion. Anyone who prefers an eBook or audiobook through Libby, Cloud Library, or Hoopla should check out a copy on their own. Library staff cannot reserve these for you or extend the due date.
